Callio Therapeutics Launches With $187M to Fight Cancer
2 min read
A new player in the cancer treatment space has officially entered the scene — and it’s starting strong with major funding and ambitious technology.
Callio Therapeutics, a newly launched biotech startup with headquarters in Seattle and Singapore, has raised an impressive $187 million in a Series A funding round. The investment was led by Frazier Life Sciences, a well-known biotech-focused investment firm, giving the company a solid foundation right out of the gate.
At the core of Callio’s mission is a next-generation approach to cancer treatment. The company has secured an exclusive license from Hummingbird Bioscience to develop therapies based on multi-payload antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). This emerging technology uses antibodies to deliver multiple cancer-fighting agents directly to tumor cells, offering a more targeted and potentially more effective alternative to traditional chemotherapy.
Unlike standard treatments, which can affect both healthy and cancerous cells, ADCs aim to precisely attack tumors. Callio’s approach takes this a step further by using multiple payloads, which could help overcome drug resistance — a major challenge in cancer therapy.
The science behind this platform has already shown promise. Earlier this year, researchers from Hummingbird Bioscience presented encouraging preclinical data, highlighting the potential of their fourth-generation ADC technology. According to the findings, the platform can be tailored to target specific tumor types while improving treatment effectiveness.
Callio’s first focus will be on developing a therapy for HER2-positive breast cancer, a type of cancer known for its aggressive nature. CEO Piers Ingram said that multi-payload ADCs could significantly improve outcomes by delivering carefully designed drug combinations directly to cancer cells.
The leadership team brings deep experience from the biotech world. Alongside Ingram, the company includes Chief Scientific Officer Jerome Boyd-Kirkup and Chief Business Officer Angèle Maki — both formerly with Hummingbird Bioscience. Dr. Naomi Hunder joins as Chief Medical Officer, bringing experience from companies like ProfoundBio and Silverback Therapeutics.
The funding round also attracted a strong lineup of global investors, including Jeito Capital, Novo Holdings A/S, Omega Funds, Norwest, and Pureos Bioventures, among others. Their backing signals strong confidence in Callio’s technology and long-term potential.
Meanwhile, Hummingbird Bioscience is continuing to expand its reach. Earlier this year, it granted a separate exclusive license to Immunome to develop monoclonal antibody therapies targeting single cancer markers.
With substantial funding, cutting-edge science, and an experienced team, Callio Therapeutics is positioning itself as a company to watch in the rapidly evolving field of cancer treatment.
