Reddit Expands AI Moderation to Reduce Karma Barriers

Reddit is making it easier for new users to join conversations by reducing the platform’s reliance on its long-standing karma system. The company announced a range of updates on Wednesday that focus on improving moderation, fighting spam and abuse, and creating a more welcoming experience for first-time posters.
For years, Reddit’s karma score and account age have been used by many communities to decide whether someone can post or comment. While these restrictions helped reduce spam, bots, and trolls, they also made it difficult for genuine new users to participate. Reddit now believes smarter moderation powered by artificial intelligence can handle many of these challenges, allowing communities to become more open without compromising safety.
The company is building more advanced abuse prevention systems that could eventually reduce the need for strict karma and account-age requirements. Although Reddit did not announce plans to eliminate karma completely, it suggested that the reputation system may become less important over time as AI-powered tools take on a larger role.
According to Reddit, the goal is to make it easier for legitimate newcomers to contribute while giving moderators greater confidence that harmful content will still be filtered out automatically.
A key part of this effort is the expansion of Rules Hub, Reddit’s AI-powered moderation platform. The company said the tool, which was previously tested in more than 700 communities, is now available for all newly created communities. Reddit also plans to roll it out to both new and existing communities later this year.
Rules Hub uses large language models (LLMs) to understand the intent behind a community’s rules instead of simply matching keywords. This allows the system to better recognize natural language, context, and more complicated situations, helping moderators enforce rules more accurately.
Reddit is also improving several other moderation features. One update helps moderators clearly explain community rules to users before they publish posts or comments, reducing accidental rule violations. Another enhancement makes it easier for members to select their community flair, the custom label displayed next to their username within a specific subreddit.
The company acknowledged that many first-time users currently face hidden obstacles, including minimum account age requirements, karma thresholds, confusing post removals, and difficulty finding the right communities. Reddit says its latest improvements are designed to remove those barriers while still protecting communities from spam and abuse.
Beyond moderation, Reddit is continuing to modernize its platform. The company confirmed it will update its legacy desktop experience, known as Old Reddit, by moving moderator workflows to its newer infrastructure and migrating important moderation bots to the updated system.
The announcement comes shortly after Reddit reported strong financial results for the second quarter. The company posted $805 million in revenue and earnings per share of $1.25, both exceeding analyst expectations. Despite the strong earnings report, Reddit’s stock declined after CEO Steve Huffman pointed to “choppy” search referral traffic as an ongoing challenge.
During the company’s recent earnings call, executives said one of Reddit’s main short-term priorities is to encourage more of its roughly 500 million weekly active users to become daily users. Product improvements like AI-assisted moderation, easier onboarding, and a smoother community experience are expected to play an important role in reaching that goal.
As Reddit continues investing in artificial intelligence and smarter moderation systems, the platform hopes to strike a better balance between protecting communities and making it easier for new users to join discussions. If successful, these changes could significantly reshape how people experience Reddit, especially those visiting the platform for the first time.
