Anthropic hits $61.5B valuation after $3.5B raise

AI startup Anthropic is on a massive growth streak. The company behind the Claude chatbot has raised a fresh $3.5 billion, pushing its valuation to an eye-popping $61.5 billion.

The new funding comes just months after Amazon doubled down on its commitment to Anthropic with a $4 billion investment announced in November—adding to an earlier $4 billion backing. However, a company spokesperson clarified that Amazon did not participate in this latest round.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic has quickly become one of the most valuable AI startups globally. Its flagship AI assistant, Claude, is already being used by major companies such as Zoom, Snowflake, and Cursor. Claude also plays a role in powering Amazon’s newly introduced Alexa+ assistant.

The company’s growth isn’t just about funding—it’s also seeing strong business traction. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic reached an annual revenue run rate of around $1 billion by the end of last year, signaling rising demand for enterprise AI tools.

Beyond San Francisco, Anthropic has been quietly expanding its footprint. It opened a Seattle office last year, focusing mainly on engineering talent. The team in Seattle now includes around 40 employees, with several open roles still available. The city has become a key hub for AI innovation, attracting both startups and tech giants.

Seattle’s growing AI ecosystem is fueled by major players like Microsoft and Amazon, along with organizations such as the Allen Institute for AI and the University of Washington. The presence of these institutions has made the region a magnet for top engineering talent.

Anthropic’s Seattle team includes experienced leaders from across the tech industry, with backgrounds at companies like Stripe, GitHub, and Apple. This reflects the company’s strategy of building a strong technical foundation as it scales.

The latest funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, among others.

Looking ahead, Anthropic says the fresh capital will go toward building next-generation AI systems, expanding computing power, and deepening research into AI safety and alignment. The company also plans to accelerate its global expansion efforts.

Adding to the momentum, Google recently agreed to invest another $1 billion in Anthropic, according to CNBC.

With big funding, strong partnerships, and growing adoption, Anthropic is positioning itself as a major force in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
