Amazon Acquires Bee, Creator of AI Wearable Assistant
3 min read
Amazon is expanding its artificial intelligence ambitions with the acquisition of Bee, a San Francisco-based startup that developed a wearable AI assistant designed to listen to conversations, generate summaries, and help users organize daily information.
The acquisition was announced by Bee CEO and co-founder Maria de Lourdes Zollo, who shared the news in a LinkedIn post. While the financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, she said joining Amazon will allow the company’s vision of personalized AI to reach a much larger audience.
“When we started Bee, we imagined a world where AI is truly personal,” Zollo wrote. She added that the startup’s mission has always been to create technology that understands users’ lives and helps them through continuous learning, and she believes Amazon is the right place to continue that journey.
A Wearable AI Assistant for Everyday Life
Founded last year, Bee introduced a $49.99 wearable wrist device that continuously listens to conversations and automatically creates transcriptions, summaries, and useful insights.
Beyond recording spoken interactions, the platform can connect with services such as email, calendars, contacts, and other personal data sources to provide a more complete AI assistant experience.
The startup is one of several companies working to build always-on AI wearables, a category that has attracted growing attention as technology companies race to develop the next generation of intelligent personal assistants.
Privacy Remains a Key Focus
Given the nature of its product, Bee has emphasized privacy and security from the beginning.
The company says it does not permanently store audio recordings and follows high security standards to protect user information. Bee has also been testing on-device AI models, allowing some processing to happen directly on the wearable instead of relying entirely on cloud-based systems.
Amazon indicated that the same privacy-focused approach will continue after the acquisition.
In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said the company designs products with customer privacy and security in mind while giving users control over their experience. The spokesperson added that those principles would also apply to Bee’s technology.
Employees to Join Amazon
As part of the acquisition, Bee employees have received offers to become part of Amazon, according to the company spokesperson.
However, Amazon has not revealed how Bee’s technology will be incorporated into its existing product lineup or broader artificial intelligence strategy.
The acquisition comes as competition in AI hardware continues to intensify. Major technology companies including OpenAI and Meta are also investing heavily in personal AI devices and software designed to provide more natural, always-available digital assistance.
Backed by Leading Investors
Despite being founded only last year, Bee quickly attracted investor interest and raised $7 million in funding.
Its investors include Exor, Greycroft, New Wave VC, Banana Capital, and several other backers.
The startup was founded by Maria de Lourdes Zollo and CTO Ethan Sutin, who both previously worked at Twitter and Squad, a social networking startup that was later acquired by Twitter.
With Bee now joining Amazon, the acquisition highlights the growing importance of wearable AI technology as major tech companies compete to build more personalized and intelligent digital assistants. While Amazon has yet to outline its plans, the deal signals continued investment in AI experiences that go beyond traditional smartphones and smart speakers, bringing intelligent assistance closer to users throughout their daily lives.
