JioPC Wants to Turn Old PCs Into AI Machines

Reliance Jio is betting that Indians may not need to buy a new computer to access modern computing power.

The company, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has opened its JioPC cloud PC service to all internet users in India, including people who do not use Jio for their broadband or telecom services. The idea is simple: instead of replacing an aging computer, users can connect to a virtual PC hosted in Jio’s cloud.

JioPC was initially launched in July 2025 for Jio broadband subscribers. With the latest expansion announced Wednesday, the service is now available as a standalone subscription to anyone with an internet connection.

Your Old PC Could Get a Cloud Upgrade

Jio says JioPC can give computers that are up to eight years old access to the computing resources required for modern applications, including AI tools, without requiring users to purchase new hardware.

The virtual machines can offer up to eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, depending on the plan.

Pricing starts at ₹1,000 (around $11) for two months. A 12-month plan costs ₹4,000 (about $42) for 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage, while the higher-end option costs ₹5,000 (roughly $53) and comes with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The move comes as computers in India are staying in use for longer.

According to IDC estimates, India had more than 65 million PCs in use in 2025, including approximately 34 million consumer machines and 31 million commercial PCs. IDC expects that installed base to reach nearly 69 million by the end of 2026.

Consumers and small businesses are now typically replacing their computers every five to six years, compared with four to five years in 2022, according to Bharath Shenoy, senior market analyst at IDC. Enterprises are also extending replacement cycles to around four years, up from three previously.

Jio Sees an Alternative to Buying Hardware

Jio’s strategy is to move more of the computing workload away from the physical machine and into its data centers.

That could allow users to continue using older computers while accessing greater processing power and storage through the cloud. For Jio, it also creates an opportunity to sell computing capacity without requiring customers to purchase expensive new devices.

Prabhu Ram, vice president of the industry research group at Gurugram-based CyberMedia Research, believes this could change how some consumers think about upgrading their computers.

Rather than repeatedly spending money on new hardware, users could pay for access to computing power through a subscription.

Still, Ram does not expect JioPC to replace traditional computers. Instead, he sees it potentially creating a lower-cost option for households, students and other price-sensitive users who may not otherwise consider purchasing an AI-capable PC.

Internet Connectivity Remains a Challenge

There is one major catch: JioPC depends on a stable internet connection.

Unlike a traditional PC, which can continue working when the internet goes down, a cloud-based computer can be affected by connectivity problems. That could become especially important in smaller cities and towns, where affordable computing has significant potential but internet reliability can vary.

Consumers also have another option: refurbished PCs. Shenoy noted that refurbished machines can provide inexpensive hardware ownership without requiring users to maintain a subscription or depend on constant connectivity.

Is JioPC Really an “AI PC”?

Jio’s AI-ready pitch also raises another question: what exactly qualifies as an AI PC?

The company has not revealed many details about the hardware running JioPC’s cloud infrastructure. The specifications it has disclosed also do not mention dedicated AI accelerators designed for running generative AI workloads directly on the device — a feature increasingly associated with the latest generation of AI PCs.

For Jio, therefore, the bigger challenge may not simply be providing cloud computing. It will need to convince consumers that computing power itself is something worth paying for every month.

As Ram put it, the real test will be whether cloud computing becomes a “daily utility” for consumers rather than simply an occasional workaround when their existing hardware is no longer powerful enough.

If Jio succeeds, the company could create a new path for Indian consumers to access modern computing without following the traditional cycle of buying a new PC every few years.
