Nadella Signals Microsoft Will ‘Exploit’ New OpenAI Deal

Satya Nadella has made it clear: Microsoft plans to fully leverage its updated partnership with OpenAI—and he’s not shy about it.

Speaking after earnings, the Microsoft chief described the revised deal as a win-win, even as industry watchers question whether the company has lost its competitive edge in AI.

A New Kind of Partnership

Under the updated agreement, Microsoft no longer has exclusive access to OpenAI’s technology. That raised eyebrows when OpenAI quickly announced collaborations with rivals like Amazon Web Services.

Still, Nadella downplayed concerns. He emphasized that Microsoft retains access to OpenAI’s intellectual property—including advanced models and AI agents—without paying royalties for their use through 2032.

“We fully plan to exploit it,” Nadella said, referring to this long-term access.

Big Business, Big Numbers

The confidence comes as Microsoft’s AI business continues to grow rapidly. The company reported an annual revenue run rate of $37 billion from AI, marking a 123% year-over-year increase.

Nadella also pointed out that OpenAI remains a major customer. Beyond AI accelerators, OpenAI relies heavily on Microsoft’s broader cloud infrastructure, creating a two-way financial relationship.

This includes OpenAI’s commitment to spend over $250 billion on Microsoft’s cloud services, as well as Microsoft’s 27% ownership stake in the company.

Competition Is Heating Up

Despite losing exclusivity, Microsoft is betting on flexibility. Nadella noted that enterprises increasingly prefer access to multiple AI models rather than relying on a single provider.

Microsoft’s cloud platform now offers a wide range of models—from OpenAI to Anthropic and open-source options—giving customers more choice depending on their needs.

According to Nadella, over 10,000 customers are already using multiple AI models through Microsoft’s ecosystem.

The Bigger Picture

The new deal reflects a shift in the AI industry. Instead of locking in exclusive partnerships, companies are moving toward open ecosystems where multiple players compete and collaborate at the same time.

For Microsoft, the strategy is simple: keep growing its cloud business while maximizing access to top-tier AI technology.

Whether this approach will pay off long-term remains to be seen—but for now, Nadella is confident the company is well positioned in the evolving AI race.
