How to Disable Gemini AI Pop-Ups in Google Docs
2 min read
Google has been steadily adding Gemini AI features across its Workspace apps, but not everyone is happy about the change. For some users, opening a Google Doc now brings up a large “Write with Gemini” prompt before they can even begin typing.
While the AI assistant is designed to help with writing, many users simply want a distraction-free workspace. The good news is that Google provides a few settings that can reduce or completely remove these AI prompts.
Remove the Gemini Bar in Google Docs
If the “Write with Gemini” box appears at the bottom of your document, there’s a simple way to hide it.
Open your Google Doc and click Gemini in the top menu bar. From the drop-down menu, select Bottom Bar Preferences, then disable the bottom bar. Once turned off, the AI prompt at the bottom of the document will disappear, giving you a cleaner writing experience.
Some users have tried asking Gemini itself how to remove the feature, only to find that the chatbot suggests closing the conversation with the “X” button. However, this only dismisses the chat window temporarily and does not disable Gemini.
Turn Off Google Workspace Smart Features
Other Google Docs users have also reported AI tools such as the “Help me write” suggestion appearing near the text cursor. Instead of disabling every AI feature individually, Google allows users to switch off many Workspace AI functions through their Gmail settings.
To do this:
- Open your Gmail inbox.
- Click the Settings gear icon.
- Select See all settings.
- Scroll down until you find Google Workspace smart features.
- Click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
You’ll see two separate options. The first controls AI-powered smart features across Google Workspace, including Gemini experiences in apps like Google Docs. Turning this option off removes many of the AI-powered writing suggestions.
The second option manages other smart features, such as Gmail automatically creating calendar events from travel confirmations. Users who still enjoy those conveniences can leave this setting enabled while disabling only the Workspace AI features.
A Simpler Writing Experience
As Google continues integrating Gemini across its productivity apps, some users appreciate the extra assistance, while others prefer a more traditional writing environment without AI interruptions.
Fortunately, Google offers built-in controls that let users customize their experience. By turning off the Workspace smart features and disabling the Gemini bottom bar, writers can enjoy a cleaner interface and focus on creating content without constant AI prompts appearing on the screen.
For users who simply want to open a document and start typing, these settings provide an easy way to regain a distraction-free workspace while still keeping access to other Google services if needed.
