X Rolls Out Rebuilt Android App After Year-Long Overhaul

X has officially launched a completely rebuilt version of its Android app, marking the end of a development effort that lasted nearly a year. The Elon Musk-owned social media platform says the redesigned app delivers a faster, smoother, and more reliable experience while laying the groundwork for quicker feature releases in the future.

The refreshed Android app became available for download on Monday after X announced the rollout through its official engineering account. Rather than updating the existing application, the company rebuilt the Android version from scratch to address long-standing performance issues that had left it trailing behind its iOS counterpart.

According to X, users should notice improvements in several core areas, including app loading speeds, smoother scrolling, faster notifications, and overall responsiveness. The company believes the new foundation will also make it easier to introduce new features at a much faster pace.

The project has been in development for close to a year. Last August, X Head of Product Nikita Bier revealed that the company was assembling an Android “dream team” dedicated to transforming the app’s performance and user experience. A few months later, Bier pointed out that October had become one of X’s strongest months ever for Android downloads, reinforcing the importance of investing in the platform.

With the release now complete, Bier described the initiative as one of the biggest engineering efforts in the company’s history. He emphasized that the Android application wasn’t simply refreshed but entirely rebuilt.

“It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed,” Bier wrote in a post on X.

The launch comes as X continues expanding its ecosystem with several new products and services. In recent months, the platform has introduced X Money, its payments service, and X Chat, its messaging platform, both of which were released as standalone applications.

The company also sees the redesigned Android app as an opportunity to strengthen its presence in international markets, where Android remains the dominant mobile operating system. A more polished app could encourage both new users and former users to download or return to the platform after years of Android-related complaints.

The previous Android experience had become a significant concern for many users. At one point last year, performance issues were so severe that tapping links to X posts sometimes failed to load the content entirely. Those problems highlighted the need for a complete rebuild instead of incremental updates.

Despite the major improvements, X acknowledges that the work isn’t finished. Bier said the team is still focused on optimizing performance for older Android devices and adding support for Spaces, the platform’s live audio feature. Both improvements are currently under development.

In addition, several features already available elsewhere are expected to arrive on Android soon. Bier confirmed that the new video editor, react-with-video functionality, cashtags, and custom timelines are all on the roadmap for future Android updates.

Existing Android users don’t need to install a separate application. The rebuilt version is available through the Google Play Store, and users can access the new experience simply by updating their current X app.

With this release, X hopes to close the gap between its Android and iOS experiences while creating a stronger technical.
