Instagram Unveils a Sharper, More Modern Wordmark

Instagram has given its branding a fresh update, introducing a redesigned wordmark that puts a new spin on the way the platform spells out its name.
The company announced the change on Thursday, with Instagram head Adam Mosseri sharing the updated design on both Instagram and Threads. According to Mosseri, the new wordmark is intended to look “sharper and more modern” while still drawing inspiration from Instagram’s original identity and keeping the overall design simple.
The update replaces a wordmark that had been in use for around a decade. Instagram appears to believe the older design had started to feel dated, making a refresh necessary as the platform continues to evolve.
A Familiar Name With a New Look
The redesigned wordmark has already generated a mix of reactions online. As expected with a major consumer brand, some users have questioned the need for a change, while others have welcomed the updated appearance.
Much of the discussion has focused on the typeface. The new lettering uses more distinctive curves, particularly around the letters “s,” “r,” and “g.” The style has a somewhat cursive feel, giving the familiar Instagram name a more artistic appearance.
Not everyone is convinced by the new design, though. Some users have joked that the unusual shape of the lowercase “r” makes the wordmark look like it says “Instagzam.” Still, Instagram is such a recognizable brand that most people are likely to identify the name immediately despite the stylized lettering.
The cursive-inspired design is also an interesting choice at a time when traditional cursive handwriting has become less common among younger generations. Some of the letter shapes may therefore take a little more effort to recognize than the straightforward typography used in the previous version.
Instagram’s Last Major Design Change Came in 2016
The new wordmark is not Instagram’s first major branding update.
The platform last made a significant change to its visual identity in 2016. At the time, Instagram moved away from its familiar brown camera logo featuring a rainbow stripe and introduced the colorful pink-gradient icon that remains associated with the app today.
That 2016 redesign represented a much bigger visual transformation than the latest wordmark update. The current change focuses specifically on the text used to display Instagram’s name rather than replacing the platform’s well-known app icon.
For now, it remains unclear whether the wordmark redesign is part of a larger branding refresh.
Will Instagram Change Its App Icon Too?
Meta has not yet responded to a request for additional comment about the redesign. The company also has not confirmed whether Instagram users should expect more visual changes in the future.
One of the biggest unanswered questions is whether the company could eventually introduce a new app icon alongside the updated wordmark.
For now, the redesigned lettering appears to be the main change. While reactions have been mixed, the update gives Instagram’s branding a noticeably different personality without moving too far away from the name and identity that users have recognized for years.
The redesign also highlights how difficult it can be for major technology brands to update familiar visual identities. Even relatively small changes to a logo can trigger strong reactions when millions of people have been seeing the same design every day.
Instagram’s latest wordmark may take some time for users to get used to, but the company’s goal is clear: modernize a decade-old design while keeping the brand instantly recognizable.
