Google Quick Share Gets a Tap-to-Share Upgrade

Google is making it easier for Android users to exchange information and files between devices with a new update to Quick Share. Announced alongside the Pixel 11 lineup on Wednesday, the upgraded feature introduces a simple tap-to-share experience that brings Google’s wireless sharing system closer to Apple’s AirDrop and NameDrop.

With the new Quick Share experience, Android users can share contact details, photos, videos, and other content simply by bringing two compatible devices close together.

Share files with a simple tap

The updated Quick Share is designed around what Google calls an “instant, two-way exchange.” Instead of going through several steps to find a nearby device, users can bring their Android phone close to another compatible Android device to begin the sharing process.

Google is also adding the ability to start the process directly from the phone’s Share Sheet. Users can select a photo or video they want to send, choose Quick Share, and then bring the two devices together to complete the transfer.

The goal is to make sharing feel faster and more natural, particularly when two people are standing next to each other and want to exchange something quickly.

Google catches up with Apple’s NameDrop

The update also brings Android closer to a feature Apple introduced with iOS 17. Apple’s NFC-powered NameDrop allows iPhone users to exchange contact information, photos, or videos by bringing their phones together.

Google’s new Quick Share functionality follows a similar tap-based approach while remaining part of the existing Quick Share system.

For Android users, the change could make one of the platform’s most useful sharing tools much more convenient. Rather than manually searching for a nearby device, the physical proximity between the phones becomes part of the sharing process.

Pixel devices get it first

Google is beginning the rollout on Wednesday for Pixel 6 and newer devices. This means owners of relatively recent Pixel phones will be among the first Android users to receive the new tap-to-share functionality.

The feature is also scheduled to reach Samsung’s latest foldable devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8.

Google says additional devices will gain support by the end of the year, although it has not provided a complete list of compatible models yet.

The Quick Share update is another example of Google focusing on making Android’s device-to-device experience simpler. With tap-to-share functionality now joining the platform, Google is moving Quick Share closer to the kind of effortless sharing experience that iPhone users have become familiar with through AirDrop and NameDrop.
