Microsoft 365 Outage Enters Day Two as Recovery Continues

Microsoft is still working to fully restore several Microsoft 365 services after an outage that began affecting customers with problems including delayed emails, failed messages and authentication issues.

The disruption, which has now stretched into a second day, was linked to an issue with Exchange Online, the service that powers email for Outlook users. While Microsoft has made noticeable progress, the company has not yet declared the incident completely resolved.

In its latest update shared on X, Microsoft said its “mitigation actions are continuing to progress.” The company also reported that telemetry indicators remain positive and that service availability is improving.

Outlook was not the only service affected

Outlook email received much of the attention during the outage, but Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 status page shows that the problem reached several other services.

Affected or disrupted services included SharePoint, Copilot, Teams, Purview, Defender XDR, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Universal Print.

Microsoft attributed the wider impact to an issue involving a core authentication configuration used by multiple Microsoft 365 services.

The company’s investigation eventually identified a misconfiguration that was preventing authentication components from “deploying as expected to a portion of infrastructure.”

That meant the problem was not limited to email. Because the authentication configuration was shared across multiple Microsoft 365 services, other products were also affected.

Microsoft works through a series of fixes

Microsoft spent Monday investigating recent changes that could have contributed to the incident. It then tested and deployed different mitigation measures aimed at restoring services for affected users.

As those changes rolled out, the company said Outlook users should experience a gradual improvement in mail flow.

By around 10 p.m. ET on Monday, Microsoft reported that email delivery was improving, although search functionality was still experiencing problems.

The situation improved further overnight.

At approximately 3:05 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Microsoft said it was seeing improvements in Outlook’s search functionality as well.

For users who rely on Microsoft 365 for work, those improvements should mean fewer problems accessing email and other connected services. However, Microsoft has stopped short of saying everything is fully back to normal.

Extended monitoring is now underway

The latest stage of Microsoft’s response is focused on monitoring the recovery and making sure the fixes hold.

The company said its telemetry continues to show positive signs, while overall service availability is improving. Microsoft is now entering an extended monitoring period as it works toward a full resolution.

For now, that means some customers may continue to experience issues even as the broader outage improves.

The incident highlights how a problem in a shared authentication system can have a much wider impact across cloud services. A single configuration issue can affect multiple products at once, particularly when those products depend on the same underlying infrastructure.

Microsoft’s current priority is therefore not only restoring access but also confirming that the services remain stable after the mitigation measures have been deployed.
