Airbnb Brings AI Search and New Social Features to Its App
3 min read
Airbnb is making its app more useful both before and during a trip, with new AI-powered search tools, social features and a wider range of services for travelers.
The company’s latest fall product update expands Airbnb beyond accommodation bookings. While it continues adding services that can help travelers during their stays, Airbnb is also looking to make trip discovery more personalized by using artificial intelligence and information from its growing network of users.
More Services Beyond Accommodation
Airbnb began expanding into travel-related services last year, and its latest update builds on that strategy. Depending on the location, users can now access services such as meal delivery, laundry, baby-gear rentals, ski rentals and boat rentals.
The company is also expanding grocery delivery to more locations.
The goal is to make it easier for travelers to handle everyday needs without leaving the Airbnb app. However, availability for some of these services remains limited to specific locations.
AI Search Comes to Airbnb
One of the biggest changes in the update is the company’s new AI-powered search experience.
Airbnb has taken a careful approach to artificial intelligence. CEO Brian Chesky has previously avoided turning the platform into a chatbot-style experience. Instead, the company has focused on using AI to improve how people discover and compare properties.
Users can now turn on an AI search toggle and describe what they are looking for using either text or voice prompts.
The search experience can then generate dynamic filters based on the user’s preferences. For example, someone searching for “baby” could see additional options related to cribs, playgrounds, children’s books and toys.
Airbnb is also using AI to highlight relevant features of individual properties. For travelers comparing several homes, AI-powered summaries and reviews can help them compare listings saved to their wish lists.
“We are finally making our first foray into AI search,” Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky told TechCrunch, adding that the feature is only the beginning and that the company plans to iterate on it quickly in the coming months.
Chesky also pointed to the challenge of applying AI to a large e-commerce platform. Airbnb, he said, needs to make sure AI search improves discovery without hurting conversion rates.
Airbnb Expands Its Social Side
AI isn’t the only area getting attention. Airbnb is also increasing its focus on social features designed to encourage users to travel more and discover additional experiences.
The app began allowing users to connect with friends and other travelers on the platform last year. The latest update takes that idea further.
Travelers can now explore a map showing past or upcoming trips connected to people in their network. Selecting a trip can reveal where that person stayed and which experiences they booked or explored.
For users who prefer to keep their travel activity private, Airbnb also provides an option to prevent their trips from being shared with others.
Discovering Neighborhoods
Airbnb is also creating neighborhood pages using guest reviews and information from other sources.
These pages are designed to help travelers learn more about an area and discover nearby places to eat and activities to try.
Together, the new services, AI search tools and social discovery features show Airbnb’s broader push to become more than a place to book a stay. The company is combining travel services, personalized discovery and recommendations from its community to make more parts of the trip-planning process available through its app.
