TikTok Launches ‘Must Eat’ to Help Users Discover Restaurants
3 min read
TikTok is expanding its role in food discovery with a new feature designed to help users find popular restaurants and local dining spots. Called “Must Eat,” the community-driven guide brings restaurant recommendations from across the United States into one place, making it easier for users to decide where to eat.
The feature, introduced on Wednesday, builds on TikTok’s growing influence on restaurant discovery. Viral food videos have already helped local businesses attract new customers, and the company is now turning that activity into a more organized way to explore dining options.
TikTok Takes on Yelp and Google Maps
With Must Eat, TikTok is moving into a space dominated by established platforms such as Yelp and Google Maps. While those services rely heavily on maps, search results, and traditional reviews, TikTok is taking a different approach by using recommendations and food-related content shared by its community.
The new guide draws on more than 40 million posts and comments to bring restaurant suggestions and curated dining lists together. Rather than requiring users to search through individual videos and comments, the feature offers a centralized place to discover restaurants that are attracting attention on the platform.
Users can explore dining options by city and narrow their choices using filters for cuisine, price, rating, and location. These tools are designed to make comparing restaurants easier, whether someone is looking for a casual meal nearby or planning a special night out.
Two Categories for Different Dining Experiences
Must Eat organizes its recommendations into two main categories, helping users find restaurants based on the kind of experience they want.
Everyday Eats focuses on casual dining options, neighborhood favorites, and places people might visit regularly. The category is intended for users looking for convenient food recommendations and local spots worth trying.
Elevated Dining, meanwhile, highlights restaurants suited to celebrations, special occasions, and nights out. This gives users another way to discover dining experiences that fit a particular event or plan.
By separating everyday restaurants from more upscale dining options, TikTok aims to make its recommendations useful for different occasions and budgets.
Restaurant Reservations Available Through OpenTable
TikTok is also adding a booking option to the experience. At select restaurants, users can make reservations directly through the platform using OpenTable.
The integration could make the process of discovering and visiting a restaurant more convenient. Users can find a restaurant through TikTok content and, where the option is available, move directly to booking without switching to a separate service to complete the reservation.
This feature also builds on TikTok’s existing connection between food videos, restaurant discovery, and real-world visits.
Must Eat Launches in Three Major US Cities
The feature is initially rolling out in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. TikTok users can access Must Eat through several entry points, including the search bar, the Local feed, restaurant pages, and location links attached to videos featuring participating restaurants.
The launch gives TikTok an opportunity to turn the restaurant recommendations already circulating on its platform into a more structured discovery experience.
For diners, Must Eat offers a new way to find restaurants using recommendations drawn from TikTok’s community. For restaurants, it creates another opportunity to reach potential customers through food-related content and local discovery.
As TikTok develops the feature, its combination of community recommendations, restaurant filters, and selected OpenTable reservations positions the platform to compete more directly in the restaurant discovery market.
