Apple’s New Siri Upgrade Could Challenge ChatGPT

Apple may be preparing its biggest Siri overhaul yet — and leaked previews suggest the company is aiming directly at rivals like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Ahead of this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, a new report from Bloomberg has revealed mockups and details of Apple’s upcoming AI-powered Siri experience for iPhone users.

The redesigned assistant is expected to become deeply integrated across iOS 27, bringing conversational AI features directly into Apple’s ecosystem while keeping the company’s strong focus on privacy.

According to the report, Siri’s familiar interface is getting a major visual refresh. Instead of appearing as a floating orb at the bottom of the screen, Siri responses and animations will now emerge from the iPhone’s Dynamic Island — the pill-shaped section at the top of newer iPhones currently used for Live Activities and notifications.

Users will still be able to activate Siri with a button press, but Apple is reportedly adding a second, more advanced interaction mode designed around search.

The update takes advantage of the swipe-down gesture users already use for Spotlight Search. However, searches will now reportedly be powered by a rebuilt AI-enhanced Siri system that uses Google’s Gemini AI technology behind the scenes.

This upgraded Siri experience could handle much more than simple voice commands. Bloomberg says users will be able to launch apps, create messages, check weather updates, add calendar events, search notes, and run app shortcuts using conversational AI prompts.

Results would appear in a card-style interface connected to the Dynamic Island, creating a smoother and more interactive experience compared to the current Siri.

The leak also points to Apple launching a completely standalone Siri application. The new app is reportedly being built to compete directly with AI chatbot platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Gemini.

The app could reportedly support chat history, document uploads, photo uploads, and long-form AI conversations — features commonly found in dedicated AI chatbot apps today.

Apple’s broader AI strategy appears to mirror its long-standing partnership approach with Google Search. Rather than building every AI model entirely from scratch, the company is working with outside AI providers while also developing its own in-house systems.

That approach could help Apple move faster in the AI race without sacrificing its privacy-first reputation.

The report notes Apple is continuing to invest in local AI models that run directly on users’ devices instead of relying fully on cloud-based systems. Running AI locally could help Apple offer smarter features while keeping sensitive data more private.

Even though competitors already dominate the AI chatbot market, Apple may still hold one massive advantage: scale.

While ChatGPT reportedly has around 900 million weekly active users, Apple’s ecosystem spans roughly 2.5 billion devices worldwide. That enormous install base gives the company a huge opportunity to introduce AI tools to users who may have never downloaded standalone chatbot apps before.

With WWDC approaching, Apple’s AI plans are quickly becoming one of the most anticipated announcements of the year.
