AirTrunk Pledges $30B for Massive AI Data Center Expansion in India
3 min read
AirTrunk, the Blackstone-backed data center operator, has announced plans to invest $30 billion in India by 2030, marking one of the largest commitments ever made to the country’s digital infrastructure sector. The investment will support the development of 5 gigawatts (GW) of new data center capacity, reinforcing India’s growing position as a key destination for artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure.
The Australian company revealed the ambitious expansion plan on Friday, adding to a wave of investments from global technology firms and infrastructure providers racing to meet rising demand for AI computing power.
Major Push Into India’s AI Infrastructure Market
AirTrunk entered the Indian market earlier this year through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra. The company now plans to rapidly scale its presence by building a network of large-scale data centers across the country.
The planned 5GW of capacity represents a significant portion of India’s expected future data center growth. According to research firm Bernstein, India’s data center capacity is projected to increase from approximately 1.5GW today to as much as 8GW by 2030.
The latest investment highlights India’s increasing appeal as a global hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, technology companies are seeking new regions capable of supporting the massive computing requirements needed for advanced AI models and cloud services.
Government Incentives Attract Global Investment
India’s government has actively worked to attract foreign investment into the AI and cloud infrastructure sectors.
Earlier this year, New Delhi introduced tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers through 2047 on services sold overseas, provided those workloads are operated from Indian data centers.
These incentives have helped position India as an attractive destination for international infrastructure developers seeking long-term growth opportunities.
AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda said the company’s investment strategy is supported by government backing, India’s large pool of technical talent, and access to renewable energy resources.
Maharashtra Emerges as Key Expansion Hub
AirTrunk has already started laying the foundation for its expansion plans.
Earlier this week, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on social media that the state had exchanged a letter of intent for land allotment at the Raigad Pen Growth Center.
The site is expected to host a massive 3GW data center project involving an investment of approximately ₹2 trillion, or around $21 billion.
The company currently maintains a development pipeline of roughly 600 megawatts across Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
AirTrunk has not confirmed whether the Raigad project will account for most of its planned 5GW capacity or if additional large-scale developments will be announced elsewhere in India.
Meeting With PM Modi Signals Strong Support
The announcement follows a recent meeting between AirTrunk CEO Robin Khuda and Narendra Modi.
Following the meeting, Modi stated that the investment would strengthen India’s position as a global center for cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
The project also aligns with broader efforts to expand India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem as demand for AI services continues to surge worldwide.
Growing Competition in India’s Data Center Sector
AirTrunk joins a growing list of companies making significant infrastructure investments in India.
Major technology firms including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Uber have announced substantial commitments to AI and cloud infrastructure in the country.
Indian companies such as Reliance Industries, Adani Group, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are also expanding their data center operations.
Despite the optimism, industry experts warn that data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, water, and land. Power availability, in particular, is viewed as a potential bottleneck as infrastructure projects continue to scale.
According to Deloitte, data center expansion across the Asia-Pacific region could require tens of terawatt-hours of additional electricity by the end of the decade.
With a $30 billion commitment and plans for 5GW of capacity, AirTrunk is making one of the largest bets yet on India’s future as an AI and cloud computing powerhouse.
