The Boring Company Raises $3B at $23B Valuation

Elon Musk’s underground transportation venture, The Boring Company, has secured $3 billion in new funding, giving the company a valuation of $23 billion as it prepares to significantly expand its tunneling operations.

The Series D funding round was led by the United Arab Emirates, with several major investment firms also participating. Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Human Capital, Vy Capital, and Valor Equity Partners joined the round.

The company announced the funding on Thursday and said the new capital will support a major expansion in the UAE. The Boring Company plans to dig more than 150 kilometers of tunnels in the Middle Eastern country.

The size of the funding round is slightly below the amount the company had reportedly been targeting. The Wall Street Journal reported in July that The Boring Company was seeking to raise as much as $4 billion.

From Las Vegas to the Middle East

The Boring Company has spent most of its time and resources on tunneling projects in the United States, particularly in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There, the company operates several underground tunnels connecting hotel casinos with the Las Vegas Convention Center. The system is designed to move passengers through underground routes rather than relying on the city’s busy surface roads.

The company is also expanding its presence elsewhere in the U.S. It recently began work on a project in Nashville, Tennessee, which is planned as a 10-mile underground “loop.”

The new UAE plans represent a much larger tunneling ambition for the company. More than 150 kilometers of planned tunnels would make the project a significant expansion of The Boring Company’s existing network of operations.

Musk’s vision for underground transportation

The Boring Company was founded around the idea of tackling one of the biggest problems in growing cities: traffic congestion.

Rather than expanding roads above ground, the company wants to move vehicles underground through a three-dimensional network of tunnels. Its stated goal is to “solve traffic” by creating additional routes beneath cities.

The latest funding gives the company substantial financial backing as it attempts to turn that vision into larger-scale infrastructure projects.

With the UAE leading the $3 billion Series D round and the company targeting more than 150 kilometers of tunnels there, The Boring Company is now positioned to take its underground transportation concept far beyond its earlier projects in Las Vegas and Nashville.
