DoorDash Invests $425M in Wonder’s Food Expansion

DoorDash is deepening its presence in the food and delivery industry through a $425 million investment and acquisition deal with Wonder, the food technology company founded by entrepreneur Marc Lore.

Announced Tuesday, the agreement includes two major transactions. DoorDash will acquire Wonder’s Grubhub Campus Dining business, formerly known as Tapingo, for $300 million. It will also invest $125 million in Wonder’s $650 million Series D funding round, which was announced in July.

The partnership comes as Wonder continues building a broad food business that combines restaurant brands, delivery technology, and physical food locations. The company operates a network of ghost-kitchen food halls designed around delivery, allowing customers to order meals from multiple restaurant concepts under one roof.

Rather than focusing on a single restaurant brand, Wonder is pursuing a broader fast-casual model. Its long-term strategy is to bring different food options together through a unified system, giving customers more variety while streamlining preparation and delivery.

Lore, a veteran e-commerce entrepreneur whose previous companies were acquired by Amazon and Walmart, founded Wonder. The company has expanded through a series of acquisitions. Last year, it purchased the food delivery platform Grubhub for $650 million, adding it to a portfolio that includes brands such as Blue Apron and Tastemade.

Wonder has also acquired several New York City restaurant chains, including Mighty Quinn’s BBQ, Salt Hank’s, and Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken.

In a statement, Lore said the DoorDash partnership would allow Wonder to concentrate on its broader goal of creating “a fully autonomous food system” capable of planning, producing, and delivering personalized meals at scale. He described the ambition as serving all 21 meals people eat each week.

For DoorDash, the acquisition provides an opportunity to expand its reach beyond traditional restaurant delivery. The company said it plans to grow the Grubhub Campus Dining business into additional settings, including stadiums, hotels, and other venues.

Grubhub Campus Dining is currently active at 450 colleges and universities.

DoorDash co-founder Tony Xu said bringing the business onto its platform would offer students more choice and convenience while helping universities simplify operations and reduce friction.

Meanwhile, Wonder’s physical footprint is growing rapidly, particularly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. The company now operates 157 locations, more than quadrupling its footprint since the beginning of 2025.

Wonder also plans to enter Texas in early 2027, marking another step in its expansion beyond its existing markets. With DoorDash’s investment and the campus dining acquisition, both companies are positioning the partnership as a way to scale their food businesses across more locations and customer segments.
