Google Images Gets Pinterest-Style AI Discovery Upgrade

Google is giving Google Images one of its biggest makeovers in years, transforming the familiar image search tool into a more visual and interactive experience inspired by Pinterest. Alongside the redesign, the company is introducing AI-powered image generation directly within Google Search, making it easier for users to both discover and create visuals without leaving Google’s ecosystem.

The update comes as Google marks 25 years of Google Images, signaling a shift from a traditional search engine toward a platform focused on inspiration, creativity, and exploration.

Instead of only displaying search results, the redesigned Google Images now features a personalized “For You” gallery that continuously updates with images based on a user’s interests and browsing activity. Similar to Pinterest’s endless scrolling experience, the gallery is designed to encourage users to explore ideas across a wide range of topics, from fashion and home décor to travel destinations and lifestyle inspiration.

With this change, Google appears to be borrowing a strategy that has helped Pinterest build a loyal audience. By making image discovery more engaging, Google could keep users on its own platforms for longer periods, potentially increasing advertising opportunities while strengthening its position in visual search.

The redesign also introduces improved organization tools. Users can now save images into custom Collections, allowing them to group ideas around specific interests or future plans. For example, someone planning a vacation can create a collection for travel outfits, while another user might organize inspiration for room renovations, office setups, or home decoration projects. These collections appear as tabs above the image gallery, making it easy to revisit saved ideas at any time.

Google says the redesigned Google Images experience will begin rolling out over the next few weeks for desktop users in the United States using English. Access requires users to be signed into a Google Account.

Beyond visual discovery, Google is expanding the creative capabilities of Search by integrating AI-powered image generation directly into AI Overviews. The new feature is designed for situations where users want an image that doesn’t already exist online or have a highly specific concept they want to visualize.

Using Google’s latest Nano Banana AI model, users can simply enter a text prompt and generate a custom image without needing a separate AI application or design tool. This allows users to create personalized visuals directly within Search instead of switching to third-party AI image generators.

Google believes the feature will be especially useful for visualizing design ideas and creative concepts. Users can experiment with changes such as seeing how a living room would look with red walls, imagining a coastal-themed dorm room, or exploring other design possibilities before making real-world decisions.

The addition of AI image generation also reflects Google’s growing competition with generative AI platforms. Rather than sending users to external services when they cannot find the exact image they need, Google wants to provide both search and creation tools in one place.

According to the company, AI image generation within AI Overviews will roll out over the coming weeks in English across all regions where AI Mode currently supports image creation.

With these updates, Google Images is evolving beyond a simple image search engine into a platform that combines personalized discovery, visual inspiration, and AI-powered creativity. As competition in AI search continues to grow, Google’s latest redesign aims to make Search a destination not only for finding information but also for generating new ideas and original visual content.
