Clawdmeter Turns Claude Usage Into a Tiny AI Dashboard

A quirky new open-source gadget is turning AI coding obsession into desktop hardware.

Called the “Clawdmeter,” the project gives Anthropic users a tiny standalone dashboard that tracks their Claude Code usage in real time — complete with pixel-art animations, token statistics, and retro gaming vibes.

The device was created by Iceland-based developer Hermann Haraldsson, who built the project as a fun experiment after becoming interested in embedded hardware development.

What started as a side project has quickly attracted attention from the AI developer community, especially among so-called “tokenmaxxing” enthusiasts — programmers focused on maximizing AI token usage as a badge of productivity and AI adoption.

The Clawdmeter pairs with a computer over Bluetooth and displays live Claude Code utilization stats on a small AMOLED screen. Instead of opening terminal commands or separate monitoring tools, users can simply glance at the desk device to see how heavily they’re using Claude.

But the real appeal is its playful design.

When powered on, the device displays animated pixel-art versions of Anthropic’s Clawd mascot. The animations become more active as token usage increases, turning AI coding sessions into something resembling a digital pet or retro gaming accessory.

One Reddit user jokingly compared it to a “hardware Tamagotchi for my context window,” while another suggested Anthropic should simply send the devices to heavy users for free.

The project highlights how deeply Anthropic’s Claude ecosystem has embedded itself into modern software development culture, particularly as AI-assisted coding tools continue gaining popularity across Silicon Valley.

Haraldsson said he had little experience building hardware before starting the project and credited Claude itself for helping him complete the device in just a few days.

According to Haraldsson, AI-assisted programming dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for hardware experimentation.

“I’m not an embedded developer or anything like that,” he explained, noting that Claude guided much of the development process.

The Clawdmeter runs on compact hardware such as the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-2.16 display module, powered by a small lithium-ion battery. Users can cycle through animations and statistics using built-in physical buttons.

The dashboard displays both session-level and weekly Claude utilization data in simple charts, while additional controls allow users to trigger shortcuts tied to Claude Code’s voice and editing modes.

Haraldsson also designed the device to connect directly to Claude Code usage APIs using OAuth authentication tokens. This allows the dashboard to fetch live usage metrics and token limits directly from response headers.

Since the project is fully open source, developers can freely customize it with their own features, screens, animations, and integrations.

The response from the developer community has been surprisingly strong.

Since launching on GitHub on May 10, the project has reportedly received hundreds of stars and dozens of forks from users experimenting with their own versions of the device.

Part of the appeal appears to be nostalgia.

Haraldsson said the gadget reminds people of older single-purpose hardware devices like Walkmans, iPods, and handheld digital companions — physical tech objects that served one fun, dedicated function.

Even though similar statistics could easily be displayed on a laptop screen, the physical nature of the Clawdmeter seems to resonate with AI enthusiasts looking for a more playful and tactile experience around their coding workflows.

As AI tools become more deeply integrated into software development culture, projects like Clawdmeter show how quickly entirely new communities, habits, and even hardware ecosystems are beginning to emerge around them.
