Meta Names Kunal Shah as WhatsApp Chief in Major India Push
3 min read
Meta has appointed CRED founder Kunal Shah as the new head of WhatsApp, marking a significant leadership change as the company strengthens its focus on India. The announcement comes alongside a massive $900 million investment led by Meta in Indian fintech company CRED, highlighting the tech giant’s long-term confidence in one of its most important markets.
Shah will succeed Will Cathcart, who is stepping down after nearly seven years leading WhatsApp. Cathcart will remain at Meta, taking on a new product-building role within the company.
Meta Bets Big on India’s Growing Digital Market
The leadership transition is closely tied to Meta’s broader strategy of expanding WhatsApp beyond messaging. India, which has more than 500 million WhatsApp users, is the app’s largest market and represents a major opportunity for growth in digital payments, commerce, and business communication.
At the same time, Meta is investing $900 million in CRED through a mix of primary funding and secondary share purchases. The investment gives Meta a minority stake in the fintech startup while valuing the company at approximately $4.5 billion after the funding round.
As part of the agreement, Kunal Shah will step down as CEO of CRED but will continue to hold his personal stake in the company.
Kunal Shah Takes Charge of WhatsApp
Meta believes Shah’s entrepreneurial background makes him well suited to lead WhatsApp through its next phase of expansion.
In a statement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg praised Shah for building CRED into one of India’s leading technology companies. He said Shah brings both a strong builder mindset and a global perspective that will help guide the world’s largest messaging platform into its next stage of growth.
Founded by Shah in 2018, CRED has grown into one of India’s best-known fintech platforms, serving around 17 million monthly active users. Before launching CRED, Shah founded FreeCharge, one of India’s early digital payments startups.
Beyond running successful businesses, Shah has also earned a reputation as one of India’s most active startup investors, backing more than 250 companies while serving in several advisory and leadership roles across the country’s technology ecosystem.
Will Cathcart Leaves After Years of Growth
Will Cathcart has led WhatsApp since 2019, overseeing one of the platform’s most successful growth periods.
During his tenure, WhatsApp expanded well beyond simple private messaging. The company introduced Communities, Channels, AI-powered features, and significantly expanded its business messaging capabilities. Under his leadership, WhatsApp also crossed more than 100 million users in the United States while continuing to grow its global user base beyond three billion people.
Although WhatsApp made progress with WhatsApp Pay in India, the payments service has struggled to match the popularity of local competitors like PhonePe and Google Pay. The mixed performance in digital payments has left Meta searching for new ways to strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing fintech markets.
CRED Prepares for Its Next Phase
Following Shah’s departure from daily operations, Miten Sampat will immediately assume the role of interim CEO. Sampat has led CRED’s strategy and finance functions since 2020.
The company confirmed that its board is working on a long-term leadership plan as it prepares for a future initial public offering (IPO). The newly raised capital will help expand CRED’s offerings across payments, lending, insurance, and wealth management.
CRED’s latest valuation of around $4.5 billion marks a recovery from its May 2025 valuation of approximately $3.6 billion, although it remains below its peak valuation of $6.4 billion reached in 2022. Before its Series F funding round, the company had already raised more than $1 billion from investors.
With Kunal Shah now leading WhatsApp and Meta making one of its largest investments in India’s startup ecosystem, the company is signaling that India will play a central role in shaping the future of messaging, digital commerce, and financial services on the platform.
