DoorDash Launches AI Chatbot for Food and Grocery Orders

DoorDash is bringing artificial intelligence deeper into its platform with the launch of a new chatbot designed to make ordering food, groceries, and restaurant reservations more conversational.

The new feature, called Ask DoorDash, allows users to search using natural language prompts and even photos instead of manually browsing restaurants, stores, and product listings. The rollout represents the latest effort by technology companies to integrate AI assistants into everyday shopping experiences.

DoorDash Wants Ordering to Feel Like a Conversation

With Ask DoorDash, customers can simply describe what they want rather than searching through endless menus and categories.

Users can tell the chatbot what kind of meal they’re craving, share a recipe link, upload a grocery list, or even ask for restaurant recommendations based on specific preferences.

According to DoorDash, traditional search works well when users already know exactly what they want. However, many customers start with a general idea rather than a specific restaurant or product.

The company says Ask DoorDash is designed to fill that gap by helping users discover options through conversation.

AI Can Build Grocery Carts From Photos

One of the most notable features allows users to upload photos to create grocery orders automatically.

Customers can upload a picture of a cookbook recipe, a handwritten grocery list, or a recipe webpage. The AI then identifies the required ingredients and adds the correct quantities directly to the shopping cart.

The chatbot also helps prevent unnecessary purchases by asking whether users already have common pantry staples such as sugar, butter, and other frequently used ingredients.

DoorDash says the feature can save time while making grocery shopping more convenient and personalized.

Personalized Food Recommendations

The AI assistant can also help users decide what to eat.

For example, someone could ask for a “filling dinner for a family of four,” and the chatbot will suggest restaurants along with explanations for why they match the request.

Users can continue refining results with more detailed prompts, such as asking for kid-friendly vegetarian restaurants with mild menu options.

Once a restaurant is selected, Ask DoorDash can generate a recommended order based on dietary preferences, spending limits, group size, and previous ordering habits.

The goal is to reduce the time customers spend browsing menus while increasing personalization.

AI-Powered Restaurant Reservations

DoorDash is also extending the technology to restaurant bookings.

Through Ask DoorDash for Reservations, users can request tables using conversational prompts such as finding a date-night dinner reservation for two around a specific time.

The chatbot then searches available restaurants and presents options matching the request.

Users can continue narrowing results by asking for specific atmospheres, locations, or dining experiences.

AI Competition Intensifies in Food Delivery

DoorDash joins a growing list of companies using artificial intelligence to transform online shopping.

Earlier this year, Uber Eats introduced its AI-powered Cart Assistant, while Instacart launched an AI shopping assistant for grocery retailers.

The trend reflects a broader industry push toward conversational commerce, where AI helps customers discover products and services through natural interactions rather than traditional search methods.

Rollout Begins Across the United States

Ask DoorDash is currently being introduced on iOS devices in selected regions for restaurant discovery, grocery shopping, and reservation services.

DoorDash says availability will expand to more users across the United States over the coming weeks as the company continues testing and refining the feature.

As AI-powered shopping assistants become increasingly common, Ask DoorDash could represent another step toward making digital commerce feel more like talking to a personal assistant than using a traditional app.
