Profound Reaches $1.8B Valuation With $180M Funding Round

Profound, a startup helping brands improve their visibility in AI-powered search, has reached unicorn status after securing $180 million in a Series D funding round.

The company announced the investment on Tuesday, putting its valuation at $1.8 billion. The new round comes less than seven months after Profound raised $96 million in its Series C, highlighting the growing investor interest in tools designed for the rapidly changing search landscape.

Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins led the latest financing.

Existing backers, including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and South Park Commons, also joined the round.

Founded two years ago, Profound initially focused on analytics. Since then, the startup has expanded its platform to help businesses research markets, develop marketing strategies, and understand how consumers discover brands through artificial intelligence.

As people increasingly turn to AI systems for answers, product recommendations, and brand discovery, companies are looking for new ways to make sure their products appear in those results. Profound operates in this emerging market, commonly referred to as generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO).

The goal of these technologies is similar to traditional search engine optimization, but with a focus on AI-generated answers rather than conventional search rankings. Businesses use such platforms to track how their brands are represented and identify ways to improve their visibility across AI search experiences.

Profound says its business has been growing quickly. According to the company, revenue has tripled over the past six months. It now serves more than 1,000 enterprise customers, including major names such as Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies, and Walmart.

The funding arrives as the GEO and AEO sectors attract a growing number of startups seeking to help brands adapt to changes in consumer search behavior. With AI becoming a more common starting point for online research, companies like Profound are positioning themselves as part of the infrastructure for the next phase of digital marketing.
