Alation Confirms Cyberattack After Customer Service Disruption
3 min read
Enterprise data and AI company Alation has confirmed that it was hit by a cyberattack, days after the company reported an incident that disrupted services for some customers.
Alation develops software that helps businesses find and work with data using natural-language searches.
The company has also expanded its focus on artificial intelligence, offering tools designed to turn large volumes of complicated business data into more useful and accessible content.
The company says its technology is used by more than 500 companies around the world, including roughly half of the Fortune 1000, making the incident potentially significant for organizations that rely on Alation to manage and access business data.
When contacted by TechCrunch about the incident, Alation said it was investigating what happened.
“Alation recently identified an isolated incident involving unauthorized activity in one of its systems,” the company said in a statement provided to TechCrunch by external representative Stephen Russell. The company added that it was conducting a detailed investigation and would share more information when appropriate.
So far, Alation has provided few details about the attack. It has not explained what type of cyberattack occurred, how attackers gained access to its systems or what caused the incident. The company also has not disclosed how many customers may have been affected.
It remains unclear whether Alation has directly notified customers about the security incident or provided specific recommendations for protecting their accounts and data. The company also has not said whether attackers accessed, copied or removed any information from its systems.
The security issue follows an earlier service disruption reported by Alation on Tuesday. At the time, the company described the event as an unspecified incident that caused “degraded availability” for some customers. Alation said the problem was resolved within approximately an hour.
A significant portion of Alation’s infrastructure is hosted on Amazon Web Services, although there is currently no indication of whether the AWS-hosted systems were involved in the attack. It is also not known whether any customer or company data was exfiltrated.
The incident comes as major technology companies continue to face growing pressure from cybercriminals. Organizations that manage large amounts of sensitive, proprietary or business-critical information are increasingly attractive targets because a successful breach can potentially expose data belonging to numerous corporate customers at once.
Alation is the latest technology company to face such an incident. Earlier this month, several companies reported data theft following a breach involving European shipping company Ceva Logistics. Financial institutions and private equity firms have also reportedly faced increased targeting from hackers in recent weeks.
For now, Alation says its investigation is ongoing. Until the company provides more information, important questions remain unanswered, including what systems were accessed, whether customer information was compromised and how the company plans to prevent a similar incident in the future.
Anyone with additional information about Alation’s security incident, including Alation employees or customers who received communications about the event, can contact the reporter through an encrypted message on Signal at zackwhittaker.1337.
