Amazon Makes Alexa+ Free on Fire TV Without Prime

Amazon is bringing its AI-powered Alexa+ assistant to more living rooms, and this time, users won’t need an Amazon Prime subscription to access it.
The company announced Wednesday that Alexa+ will be available for free on all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. The upgrade adds conversational search, AI-powered content recommendations and smart home controls, giving viewers a more interactive way to use their TVs.
Until now, Alexa+ was available for $19.99 per month to customers who did not have an Amazon Prime membership. The service was first introduced on newer Fire TV devices announced by Amazon last fall.
Now, Amazon says eligible customers will receive Alexa+ automatically. There is no separate app to download and no subscription sign-up required. The rollout covers current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs and other smart television models that come with Alexa+ built in, including compatible devices from Hisense and Panasonic.
From Voice Commands to Conversations
The biggest change with Alexa+ is how users interact with their TV. Instead of relying only on traditional voice commands or searching for an exact movie or show title, viewers can have more natural conversations with the assistant.
For example, someone could ask for “a top-rated thriller” or “a historical drama with a strong female lead.” Rather than requiring a specific title, Alexa+ can use factors such as theme, age and popularity to provide recommendations.
The assistant can also go beyond entertainment. Amazon says Alexa+ can help users manage their connected smart home devices directly from the TV. That includes showing Ring camera feeds on the television screen, allowing the Fire TV to become another control point for connected devices around the home.
Amazon Follows a Broader AI Trend
Amazon’s move comes as major technology companies increasingly push AI assistants and conversational features onto everyday consumer electronics.
Google has already brought Gemini to its Google TV platform, replacing some traditional search functions with AI-powered conversational experiences. Roku also upgraded its voice assistant with AI last year.
The shift means that AI is becoming less of a standalone feature and more of a built-in part of products people already use.
Amazon says early usage figures indicate that Alexa+ is encouraging more interaction with Fire TV. According to the company, customers using Alexa+ now have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV compared with users of the original Alexa.
That could indicate that viewers are doing more than simply turning on the television and watching content. Instead, they may increasingly be using the TV itself as a way to interact with an AI assistant, discover entertainment and control other devices.
Whether that represents a major improvement or simply adds another layer of technology to the TV experience will depend on how users respond.
For Amazon, however, making Alexa+ free for compatible Fire TV owners removes one of the biggest barriers to adoption. With no Prime membership or additional subscription required, the company is effectively putting its AI assistant in front of a much larger audience.
